Modern Handmade – Vintage Inspired Mara

Hello! I’m April from Modern Handmade and I am so excited to share my Mara with you!
I have a collection of vintage fabrics and I just recently learned English smocking and I thought I would combine both of those things for my Mara. I had my daughter help choose the fabric and I was so happy when she chose this. I picked up this fabric at an estate sale and I just adore gingham. I am in love with this blouse.
I kept the basic lines of the blouse the same and just changed the yoke. Instead of having two pieces that button on the front, the yoke was cut on the fold. I added an opening and button to the back instead of having that on the front. I kept the signature shape of the front and of course had to add the piping! After I finished the hand smocking I had to figure out the best way to attach it to the top and bottom yoke pieces. You know how sometimes things work out much better in your head than on the actual piece?
Well, the adding the smocking insert to the yoke definitely gave me some trouble but I’m so happy with how it turned out. I didn’t have enough fabric for a dress, which is basically all she wears these days, but she’s very happy with this. I sewed the basic a-line blouse with the flutter sleeves (which are just adorable) in a size 5 and the fit is just perfect. She tried it on and was dancing around. The sleeves are her favorite part, well, other than it being pink.
I can’t wait for the weather to get cooler so I can make a Mara dress with the long sleeve/flutter sleeve combo. And I definitely will be adding pockets since she is in love with pockets. I hope you are enjoying seeing all these beautiful Mara blouses, I’m love how unique each one is!
