Sisko by mieke – Less is more!

By Tuesday,5 August,2014Mara-contest

Hi everyone! My name is Mieke and I blog over at siskobymieke.blogspot.be.
If you are more confident in Dutch – or are otherwise just curious – hop over to my blog to read all about my Mara-tunic ! Or, you can stroll around this Mara-blogpage for a while and be inspired by all the wonderful Mara’s that have been produced over the last few weeks. Whatever you do, do not forget to enter the Mara sew along . You can win some awesome prizes (fabric vouchers! patterns!). Don’t say I didn’t tell you!
So back to business, my Mara. It’s not a big secret that I am a huge Mara-fan (see here and here for previous versions), but a Mara dress was still high on my to-sew-list. However, the fabric I had in mind, was a coupon too small to cut a dress out of, but it did just fit a sleeveless tunic. Less is more, don’t you agree?!

The fabric is a denim blue chambray, with neon pink and yellow sparkles in it. The contrasting piping is homemade, matching the same neon pink as in the fabric (Rigato Rose -Petit Pan). Just recently, Petit Pan has started to produce matching buttons – thank you Petit Pan! I replaced the button-loop closure by a button placket. Somehow I like the symmetry this adds to the yoke.

It’s not that I am anti-symmetry! On the contrary. That’s why I added one pocket, and only one. The pocket had the same (well, more or less, I did not use a ruler) shape, and pintucks as the yoke.

Instead of closing the side seams entirely, I decided to leave a split. I used bias in the same fabric as the piping to finish these splits on the inside. Although it is mostly hidden, I like the idea that it might just peep out once in a while. Showtime! Oh, and if you notice something odd in our little model’s smile, it might be the front tooth she is missing. My youngest daughter (3) is not premature, oh no, that’s the result of her falling on her face a few days ago. Ah well, you’ll just have to cope with a few years of odd pictures on my blog. Or I ‘ll have to train her to smile without showing her teeth ;).

My daughter loves her new ‘short dress”. Thanks Marte, for hosting this great tour!
